Out that when the same issue had occurred to other users, System Restore did fix the problem, but ERUNT simply.didn't. After talking to the developer (of the scanner), it turned I'd had a problem with an antivirus scanner, and I attempted to restore from ERUNT, only to find that more than a mere registry restoration was required.

I'm not an "Insider," but I've been using and maintaining my own computers since 1984. Having done all that, I still have this issue which is annoying because Microsoft could so easily say, "indeed, this happens, don't worry about it, we'll get around to fixing it one of these days." Instead, it lets me chase around the internet looking forĪ non-existent answer to a really stupid question. No pre-installed.um, I suppose there's an expletive filter on this site, so.stuff on my machine. I replaced my hard drive after an unfortunate incident I'd rather not talk about (actually, Dell sent me a new one thank you Dell), and I reinstalled all my programs and data from scratch.

My last clean reinstall of the operating system was in May 2015. I could still lose everything, but it's not quite so likely with these methods. Dropbox is a paid subscription with theĪdd-on feature that retains deleted data for a year. All my documents sync to OneDrive (free, with my Office 365 subscription) or Dropbox. That way, if my SATA drive goes bad, I'll still have a system image. I save a system image to a separate drive. I don't use the restore points either, but that's not the point. Why would I defrag an SSD that I don't have? My drive is a SATA drive. I haven't had a real error in my event viewer in a long time, but I get a lot of these goofy ones that mean absolutely nothing in terms of computer health and performance.ĭo you hear me, Microsoft? I'll say again what I said in that other thread I mentioned above-cut it out. Microsoft does some great things-right now, I'm totally in love with Office Lens-but when it screws up, it does virtually nothing to mitigate the fallout. The necessity to spend hours searching for an explanation/solutionĪnd then we have the answers in these threads from support engineers that are absolutely useless-generic troubleshooting that tells no one a blessed thing about their problem. If Microsoft would just acknowledge its dratted bugs, everyone would be much happier. I wrote a note in another (unrelated) thread about these kinds of issues.

It's now more than two years later, my hard drive still hasn't failed (and all diagnostics report perfect health), but I continue to see this stupid error every time defrag runs on Microsoft's pre-programmed schedule. I don't know about you, xjah, but this is still happening on my machine.

Use backup software instead, Windows already has such a program and thereĪre also lots of 3-rd party programs of such kind. We would recommend to avoid the use of restore points for serious purposes, because Windows can never guarantee that some point saved in the past will be available in the next moment. The mentioned limit may be easily exceeded which results in old restore points deletion. When you perform intensive disk processing, Windows tracks changes through system restore, therefore Windows limits amount of disk space reserved for restore points. This is a normal situation when restore points disappear after an intensive disk processing. The defragmentation utility built into Windows.Īfter defragmentation I see my restore points disappeared, what happens? The question and its answer most likely apply to all defragmentation utilities, including
